BEHIND THE SEAMS

Finding Inspiration Stitch by Stitch

I wear many hats as the Costume Coordinator at Wesleyan. My roles include Costume Designer, Costume Closet Manager, Cutter/Draper, Tailor, Stitcher, Shopper, Dyer, Milliner, Craftsperson, Dresser, Wardrobe and occasionally Wigs, Hair, and Makeup.

Over the years I have honed my process for costume design, showcasing my experience in sewing and design from initial research to the final costume creation.  Here is a behind the seams sneak peek.

Step 1: Initial Brainstorming

Once the director selects the show, I begin by reading the script several times to immerse myself in the story and characters. I make a detailed costume plot plan, annotating the script with specific costume notes.

Step 2: Collaboration with the Production Team

I actively participate in meetings with the production team and the director to discuss the overall vision for the show. This includes stage design, lighting, choreography and the general mood we aim to create.

Step 3: Inspiration and Research

I create a Pinterest page to gather inspiration and conduct thorough research on the relevant period and styles. This helps in forming a solid foundation for the costume designs.

Step 4: Developing Mood Boards

I compile mood boards that include fabric swatches, images, and design concepts. These boards serve as visual references for the costume team, ensuring we are aligned on the artistic direction.

Step 5: Material Selection and Budget Management

I decide whether to pull items from our costume closet or to create new costumes from procured materials. This decision is made while working within the allocated costume budget to ensure cost-effective solutions without compromising on quality or design.

Step 6: Costume Creation

With a clear vision and detailed plans, I begin the hands-on process of bringing the costumes to life. My sewing skills come into play as my team of student costume assistants and volunteers help meticulously construct each piece, ensuring we meet the artistic and practical requirements of the production.

Step 7: Costume Fittings

Each cast member undergoes several fittings to ensure their costumes are tailored perfectly. Adjustments are made not only to guarantee a perfect fit and comfort but also to meet the requirements for quick costume changes during the performance.

Step 8: Costume Parade and Dress Rehearsal

During the costume parade, final adjustments are made before the initial dress rehearsal. At the final dress rehearsal, wigs, hair, and makeup are added to complete the characters' looks.

Step 9: Post-Show Strike and Costume Care

After the show, the cast will strike the set, and all costumes, shoes, accessories, etc., will be cleaned and returned to the costume closet.

This structured and collaborative approach ensures that every costume not only enhances the narrative but also aligns perfectly with the director's vision and the overall aesthetic of the show.
